Do you have an outdoor cat? It really doesn't need to take an interest in hunting, as gofers, ground squirrels, and rabbits are usually terrified when they catch the scent of one.
We never had gofers when we had outdoor feline friends. Unfortunately these days most adoption centers aren't too happy to let you adopt a cat if you tell them they're going to be a working indoor/outdoor cat.
My father recently paid someone to spray an awful-smelling chemical that is supposed to repel gofers for the next 5 years. I was kinda terrified to walk through our backyard with my sister's young children for the first few days until the stench went away. Smelled something like formaldehyde.
