Next time you're out in the wild and run a risk of picking it up, take a shower in
cold water when you return home. If you wash with warm water, your pores are opened and your reaction will be worse, but if you shower with cold water and lots of soap, it's likely to wash off (assuming the reaction hasn't already started, usually within 4-6 hours of exposure).
It's a trick my dad taught my sister and I, after her first run-in with poison oak. Always works for me.
