I think there are so many possibilities here (it could have even been his sensitivity to something she had eaten earlier) that it's pointless to figure out something you'll never know for sure. I doubt it had anything to do with her menstrual cycle.
Remind him he's not a teenager anymore, you're not that gal, and hopefully he'll be ready to put a past incident behind him.
If that doesn't work, just jump him mid-cycle.
