That's a very common misconception. The entertainment industry sells to the lowest common denominator because it is more efficient marketing to large groups than it is to individuals. Actually, it's impossible by definition to market to individuals.
Individuals have unique powers of discrimination which they relinquish in order to gain group approval. Groups are bound together by lower-level identifiers. One's allegiance to groups is an allegiance to super-organisms with less operative intelligence than onself.
The old saw that "Entertainers just do what sells" needs to be examined with some finer-grained analysis - or we are stuck just repeating simple statements that are, in essence, meaningless.
