http://gaim.sf.net - it comes with most major distributions, but you should probably get the most recent version from their site - MANY improvements lately
You can use it for Chat and IRC, but I do prefer XChat -
www.xchat.org - for IRC.
Besides, we have a Gaim developer as a TFP member, so you better use it!
