Had to e-mail my friend who was a ball turret gunner in the Pacific. According to him Hawker made both Spitfires and Crossfires. Spitfires were for marine and over sea duty while the Crossfire was an over land fighter. I didn't verify any of that, I take him at his word... but he is in his late 80's so??
I would have accepted the answer regardless of his reply, was just curious what the differences were.

That's my new fact for today, then. I thought of the Hawker Hurricane, but discounted it because I'd never heard it referred to as a Crossfire Hurricane. Now I know better.
Asking a bunch of music nerds about WWII aircraft may not make for as much of a gimme as you'd think.
