Giving him mental health care may (if it is of sufficient quality) be the best thing for him, and it may be the best thing in terms of making society safe from him re-offending.
The point is he must be punished to satisfy the victim, the victims new family, and society in general.
The point of the justic system is not only to protect society, it is also to carry out vengence on behalf of the powerless.
