There was a two parter on the catholic church that was awesome in that way a couple years back.
The other thing that is AMAZING is how timely they can be. I remember when Saddam Hussein was captured I was watching it on TV on a Sunday morning. Wednesday night: the episode revolved around pulling Saddam out of a spider hole. No idea how they do that. Same thing in lots of other situations but I remember they had Janet Reno dressed as an Easter Bunny pulling Elian Gonzalez out of a closet in the same lead time. Unreal.
It will be interesting in say 50 years for folks to look back at South Park and hear what they have to say. I know the timelyness will be lost.

from what I remember working with them at Comedy Central, is that they make the episodes over the weekend for air that following Wednesday. They can still make insertions into the episode directly at the network operations center up to a few hours before air.
I enjoy watching them when I get the chance. It's not on my Tivo list since I have plenty of other things to do and twitch when the Tivo gets full.
