Are you absolutely sure that it's the ring that's causing you all these problems, and not the long-distance in itself? As I mentioned in your journal, for me it was my inability to cope emotionally with the long-distance relationship that caused all kinds of havoc with my mind and body, and it wasn't related to the BC at all, as I discovered.
Have you ruled out all hormonal BC by trying other forms first (the pill, etc)? Do they all depress your sex drive? To me, that's something I would consider before going for the IUD, but that's because I'm not a fan of huge amounts of pain and bleeding in my nether regions before I give birth to children. So I plan to wait until after having kids to start that method. But each to her own. I know JustJess has an IUD (no kids) and she could tell you about how to minimize the pain of insertion somewhat, as I recall.
