I think a majority of TFP knows that this is something unknowable. Real life isn't a Bruce Willis film. Real life isn't
CSI: New York. The situation you outlined above isn't impossible, but it's improbable. But in answer to you question: I think torture in this case would be the lesser of two evils. But it remains to be just that--evil. I don't think this reframes the discussion. We look at this issue as a real-world application in the context of American geopolitics. Your example is hyperrealistic.
