It is warm, I've been coming here from years. May's going to be a killer. A/C not an option, it's a necessity.
Many people have an odd conception of what Mexico is like. Before my move I got calls from family and friends who told me things like Mexico is more dangerous then Iraq. My first question was "have you ever been there?" Almost always the answer was "no." Or "yes, to (insert resort town here.") You just can't compare any of that to where I live.
I live in a very small fishing village near Merida. The crime rate in Merida is near zip. Other then a few break in here and there, there is no crime. Certainly no violent crime. I can see the cruise ship piers from the beach I walk but the tourist don't usually come this far down the beach. I've learned not to walk in their direction on cruise days. At night the town is full of locals and activity. I routinely walk late at night, early in the morning and have never had a problem.
Another thing I heard was how much poverty there is, that's true but not really in this area. Saw a lot of really poor areas on the drive down but this area is pretty well off. I get most of my basic needs items at Costco. It's about 30 mins from my house. On that 30min drive I pass a Range Rover dealer, a Lexus dealer and a Jaguar dealer. I think there's a Toyota and Honda dealer too. Your basic "auto row." There also two boat dealers that I'm sure have nothing in my price range. At a large shopping mall near Costco theres a Sears, multiplex theater and an ice rink. If people weren't all speaking Spanish you wouldn't know you were outside of the states.
Basically all the families that started Cancun and still own many of the resorts there live here. 100 years ago they grew a fiber here that was used in making things like rope. According to the local museum in 1916 there were more millionaires in Merdia then any where else on the planet. There are streets lined with multi-million dollar mansions that date back well over a 100 years. All with very European styling.
I find it all very interesting.
