I love coming through here and finding new movies to watch or not watch. I'm like MixedMedia, I've seen a lot, but not kept up with rating.
I've had quite a mixed-bag of movies lately.
Wickerman - 4/10 Entertaining, but stupid....really stupid. It's one of those movies that you watch and think, "Hmmm, this is pretty lame." Then you think about it and think, "Wow! That was a really stupid movie."
For Your Consideration - I fell asleep. Very disappointed. It was either brilliant because the characters were so shallow and it was a true portrayal of Hollywood. Or it was horrid because I didn't give a shit about any of them or what happened. I'm bummed because I generally love Guest and crowd.
There Will Be Blood - 9/10 Brilliant movie. There was no dialogue in the first 10 minutes or so, but the acting is so good, you are engrossed at once. The main character has no soul and this makes the movie even more entertaining. I was a bit confused about the whole preacher brother scenario. After some digging around, we found that the actor bailed or something, so it makes sense now. The comparison to
Citizen Kane is well earned. One of the best and definitely a
No Country for Old Men competitor.
The Death of the Electric Car - 7/10 Great documentary, especially with the price of oil rising.
The End of Suburbia - 8/10 Quite an eye-opener and another motivation (like we need any) to get the hell out of suburbia and back to the city.
Word Wars - 8/10 I'm a sucker for documentaries about dorky people. It was a good look into the NY Times crossword puzzles, those who do them, and the annual competition of the dorks.
The Lodger - 8/10 Wasn't expecting the movie to be silent, but it was very good. One of Hitchcock's earlier films that lives up to his signature twist. It's a definite classic.
Paris, Je t'aime - 8/10 A perfect movie for ADD people. Twenty 5-minute shorts focusing on Paris. There was something for everyone in it. This project had many big names involved (Coen brothers, Maggie Gyllenhall, Wes Craven, Natalie Portman, Elijah Wood to name a few). It is a movie that can be seen multiple times because I'm sure you'd see new things each time. I particularly enjoyed the visuals in the vampire short, the story line of the short with Ludivine Sagnier and Nick Nolte, and the Coen brothers' short was great using one of their stand-by actors, Steve Buscemi. I found it to be better than
Coffee and Cigarettes which was a similar film.
The Life of Birds - 9/10 I rented this to show my class since we are studying birds this quarter. I sat down to watch it before I took it into the school because first graders are not going to sit through a 4-hour documentary. However, I did and I loved every minute of it. Nature interests me and this was filmed very well. The kids also loved it and even got a bit upset when I fast forwarded through most of it. They were captivated by it. I can't even get them to be quiet during a 30-minute Dr Seuss cartoon, but we sat and watched this for over an hour.
