Perhaps flashy is the wrong word. Distinctive might be a better one. To the uninitiated, a 1911 looks the same as a Beretta 92 looks the same as a <insert random handgun here>. Glocks are black and square and no other gun really looks like them. Desert Eagles have that big trapezoidal shape, and are frickin' huge. These are guns that can be used as a character trademark because they're easily recognized even by people who know virtually nothing about firearms. They can also be used as short-hand. Your movie takes place in the not-to-distant future? Use P90's! They're futuristic! Wild west, sixguns are the rule. WWII, all the Germans should have Lugers (even the ones who historically speaking shouldn't). And so, and so.
