To repeat: make sure the place is such that both of you won't be out of place dressed up....and assuming that's the case, then go all out. You'll never go wrong by showing more class than less.

It's in how you carry yourself. If you speak and act like you should be wearing a suit, people will assume that's just how you dress and won't look twice.
If you act all excited like you never get to dress up and never get to eat out in nice places. Then you'll look a bit out of place.
