When my ex-wife's grandparents came to the U.S. on Ellis Island they gave their names and the official said "you can't go through life in the United States with a name like that. Choose another one."
So they gave up Shitenburger (not sure of real spelling) and chose the grandmother's maiden name. I don't know, it could have been a business opportunity: Shitenburger & Fries
