The best personality inventory (in terms of empirical support) is probably the MMPI (the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory). It was designed for clinical populations. You may have taken it from a therapist or if you interviewed for a position as a police officer (or some other job that is public safety related).

The Revised NEO Personality inventory developed by by Paul T. Costa, Jr. and Robert R. McCrae is also a good inventory and it was developed for "normal" populations. Unfortunately, it costs money. Another version of the Costa and McCrae inventory is available free and online here: http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/j/5/j5j/IPIP/

I've spent too much time reading personality research. So, I can't help myself. I have to comment on it.
I have given and evaluated far too many to actually take one and expect accurate results. I appreciate your distinction between clinical and "normal" populations. The tests are not interchangeable for the dissimilar groups.

These free tests are fun to take, and one is certainly getting their money's worth.
