The best personality inventory (in terms of empirical support) is probably the MMPI (the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory). It was designed for clinical populations. You may have taken it from a therapist or if you interviewed for a position as a police officer (or some other job that is public safety related).

The Revised NEO Personality inventory developed by by Paul T. Costa, Jr. and Robert R. McCrae is also a good inventory and it was developed for "normal" populations. Unfortunately, it costs money.
