I like the more free interchange that some people call hijacking. But I'm often surprised at how touchy some people are about it, like all they want are short direct replies exactly on topic and don't include any extra words or ideas or they freak out ...strange imo.

In forums where the discussions can get technical about narrow topics (say an automotive forum) it seems to me that some people think that going off topic pollutes the data base; so if somebody is searching for something specific it makes it harder to find or it's wrapped up in a bunch of other ideas that waste time. I don't always agree with that either since a minute or two of extra reading and thought usually extract what you're looking for.
