It scares me a little that people consider this game "a big step in storytelling." Yeah, There's a massive universe to learn about but the game has little to no direction it's so easy to get lost in the side quests. I'm not talking about the "lost in sidequests" where you'd rather spend time doing them than finishing the game, I'm talking about the kind of "getting lost in sidequests" where you're screaming "where's the damn quest to get me off this god forsaken planet!" It's not a big step in story telling, It's a step forward in virtual world creation. I'll give it that even though it's nothing compared to MMO worlds like World of Warcraft. The world pretty much has an answer for every thing except why it takes longer for the elevator to reach the bottom floor of the ship than it does for the ship to get to the other side of the galaxy... Having multiple responses to questions really wasn't all that revolutionary either, Having it all voice acted was definitely an achievement but nothing spectacular, in my opinion.
I tried to like the game, Hell, I really wanted to and I didn't want to admit I didn't like it for a few days because It was getting all these good reviews. It was just boring and riddled with mundane tasks which provided no character development. The UI was clunky and hard to use, Combat isn't bad for an RPG but I really couldn't get far enough into the game to experience it much. I upgraded my weapons and armor multiple times between fights, I spend more time equipping guns than I did shooting them.
The game looks good, but any HD game with a decent budget looks good nowadays. I only experienced a few FPS problems in game but I did have massive lag with some of my armors loading. It'd load the basic armor model and It'd be 10-15 seconds before the normal mapping textures kicked in and gave a nice detailed look.
