You are right its not a stupid question per say. The manner it was written though was very juvenile and I'm going with fake.
Plus its silly not knowing what his friend is like. If he is the kinda friend you can talk to just tell him, if not, anonymous email, and if you think he is the type that would just go ape shit don't tell him.
