I didn't se it, but from what I understand it was marked in fact. I'm told ESPN showed a "C" on the head of the bat that could be seen in one of the camera shots.
Honestly, I don't think he's lying. I know it's real tempting to give in to that strange human tendancy to see the suffering of others, but look at it this way:
1) This is Sammy Sosa. Why do fans come to see batting practice? They want to see some big hits - especially from people like Sammy. So, why not give it to them - use a corked bat in BP, no harm there.
2) If what I hear about the C is true, then that's a pretty obvious defense that he is telling the truth.
3) If he had realized that he was using a corked bat in game, he wouldn't have simply walked right over it on his way back to the dugout - he would have picked it up and tried to get it before someone else did.
4) As I read someone say somewhere else, Sammy has broken MANY bats in the past - and never has one been found to be corked. If this was something he did regularly, he most likely would have been caught by now.
