If you cry during a sports movie, it's because you want to cuddle with Michael Vick and call him daddy. Sorry, that's just way to feminine to be excusable. "Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) miraculously leads white kids to play basketball and not get completely owned by black players" isn't a recipe for a good cry and then a bucket of rocky road.
War movies... barely excusable. If it's Pearl Harbor, you have to go fly your plane into a boat, though. If grampa died, then go ahead. He was a good man... still, it's a good thing he isn't here to see you cry during a movie.
When in doubt? Nod, knowingly. That communicates emotion, but in a really dispassionate way.
