There's your answer. If it smells like rotten cheese, it is rotten cream cheese. Lox = smoked salmon and smells nothing like cheese, rotten or not.
If you have the chutzpah, bring it back to the store. Always check dates on dairy items, some stores are infamous for not rotating stock.
