Yes. Once a virus (HIV) is carried over into humans and is able to infect, it can easily become an epidemic, even if it's only transfered by bodily fluids such as blood or semen. There's something I've been thinking about when it comes to HIV: is the shared needle thing very prevalent, or is AIDS just a massive map of who's slept with who? Going by the old commercial "You're not just sleeping with them, but everyone they've slept with, and everyone they've slept with, etc.", could AIDS be a massive web of that idea? Obviously AIDS can be passed by needle or by birth, but those aren't prevalent outside of Africa.
Either way, get tested everyone. Better to be safe than to be sorry.
