The bamboo most people have isn't actually bamboo. Google 'lucky bamboo care' or something like it.
We have little direct sunlight in our current place, lucky bamboo seems to thrive better than real plant.
We replace the water every couple weeks, keep the container about half full, and tend to lightly feed/fertilize at that time. I'm not entirely sure why (and I really should know this, I think it is due to chlorination), we let a pitcher of water sit on the counter for a few hours before we water the plants. We have a couple that have to be actively pruned so they don't grow so high they collapse under self weight.
