For the scratching post, you can try sprinkling it with a bit of catnip. That worked for me. And for trimming the claws, you can actually save yourself the vet fees and do that at home. I trim my cat's claws myself with a pair of regular nail clippers (you can get special ones for the purpose, but the normal ones work just fine). Just be careful when you're cutting not to hit the quick; it's the pinkish part in the middle of the nail and is actually analogous to your finger tip physiologically, so lopping a bit of it off will not make for a happy kitty.
