We use the major carrier websites instead of the broker sites. If there are problems with your tickets or refunds are required, the booker is the one you have to deal with not the airlines.
Skogafoss registers with the airlines she likes to use. They send spam with specials and deals. We like to go to Iceland so we follow IcelandAir and sometimes we pick good fares from their specials.
We always book early, more than 21 days if possible for best pricing, 14 day pricing is tolerable, and anything last minute pricing is just horrific.
I've been using Farecaster.com since I don't have them in my head like Skogafoss does. Also keep in mind most fares don't list things like taxes and extra charges, so remember to add those onto your costs.
