One could argue that he was only following orders, but then again, no order, large or small can be followed if you believe that the people giving the orders are nuts. He knew that risks, he knew what he was doing, and I think he did the right thing.
Must have been hard though, knowing that you are killing so many, in hopes of saving your countrymen and winning a war.
