Real Estate Reality Television
I don't care for most reality television shows as they tend to focus on three premises that I disagree with:
1) Vapid Celebrities are interesting!
Not.
2) Strained work relationships and environments are entertaining!
Why would I want to come home after a long day at work only to sit down watch another bunch of stressed out employees wrestle over workplace politics? I don't care how cool or how high profile your product is. (Yeah, I'm looking at you Boyd Coddington!)
3)Huge Reno projects rammed through with intentionally short schedules and low budgets are exciting!
I used to work in the Arts so I understand the fallout from low budgets and short schedules. Hint: It blows.
Real Estate shows can fall into these conventions, but because the properties take equal billing, the tone is generally lighter.
My favourite is a Canadian show called "Property Virgins" which follows the Agent/host around with a young couple as they scope out houses for their first buy. It's actually educational and fun rather than doom and gloom and the properties are usually in Toronto around my budget so I can relate. With two children and only two bedrooms and one bathroom, a larger house is in our future. We've learned a lot watching this one.
I could go on but perhaps that's a thread unto itself. Am I alone here?
