I assume you are talking about what is commonly referred to as an FB. The W just gets in the way of Fuck Buddies.
Now to your question. The usual thing that happens is that just ONE of the buddies starts wanting more--romance, love, credit cards. This is the beginning of the end. Then it's time to find another FB.
