I don't think chess is referred to as a "nerd" sport so much because of those who typically participate, as it is to make those who are not talented (read intelligent) enough to participate (and significantly compete) feel better about themselves...
They may call you a nerd, but they're just sitting there waiting for a 6 move checkmate
