My wife has a Jetta with the same engine. We've had to replace one of the coil packs, and have done spark plugs as routine maintenance a couple of times (had the car since 2001).
You have changed plugs and wires so far, and the car doesn't start, does it still have the "check engine" light on?
Hope it's nothing terribly expensive.
