same in Oz - a lot of bars give the DD free soft drinks.
I usually drink close to home, or at least close to public transport (there is a train station 3 minutes from my house). On the few occasions where we are going out in the car, we decide who is driving home and that person limits their intake (my wife is not a heavy drinker at the best of times, but I'd be ok having a beer or two over an evening).
