I must say older people have the I don't give a crap attitude that can only come with having lived a full life. Atheism is still a somewhat radical idea. When you're making your inroads in academia I think the last thing you want to start off doing is alienating people or making enemies. So maybe there is some propensity towards being old and an outspoken atheist.
