He was
the NASA "rocket scientist" during the 50's and 60's. Although he was an SS Sturmbannfuhrer (Nazi military rank), he was brought to this country, under Operation Paperclip, when he surrendered to American forces, rather than risk surrendering to the Soviets. He was intrumental in the German V-2 rocket program, during the war. The fact that
we got him, and not the Russians, was what kept us from falling on our face during the Cold War space race.
