My wedding ring was large, thick and made from 24ct gold. It cost about £800 (so $1,600 by currnet exchange rates) and I couldn't bring myself to bin it.
I've kept it about somewhere - i think it's in a jewelery box - and if my daughter wants/deserves a decent piece of hand-made gold sometime, I'll use this as source material (but only if she knows and my current wife is OK with it).
