 I think you should be eating 2500ish on a diet.  Coming from a former athelete who had gotten out of shape.  My wife, a doctor with an interest/specialty in nutrition said "6'6" at 300; no lower than 2500, more if he's exercising" 
When I was losing weight/getting back into shape, I was at about 2300, and I was 6'/230.   That was seriously pushing it on the low end.  Too little caloric intake is almost as bad as too high.
