Ciggarettes today have many many times more nicotene and tar than ciggarettes in the 40s - 70s, which is when most of ads and movies portraying heavy smoking were made. Thats why smokers from the 40s...WWII vets and the like...seem to live (or have lived) a lot longer than smokers today.
This is probably due to the fact that in their day they consumed in 1 years the nicotine and tar that smokers today consume in one.
I don't know why the formula changed...maybe the current smokers were becomming "immune" (or used to since you dont become immune to chemical drugs) to the current mix and asked for more. If i'm not mistaken it increases a bit every year.
