I don't have experience with the 530 series, but rally race a 1990 330i. Is that 530 using a 3.0 inline 6, or a 3.0 V8 engine? I personally love the 3.0 inline 6. This is rear wheel drive right? My experience with ANY rear-wheel drive vehicle in snow is put the best snow tires you can on it in the winter, and drive extremely slow, or expect to be putting the rear-end into plenty of curbs if you tap the gas too hard.
If you are looking for something for snow driving, I'd look elsewhere. If the snow driving will be limited, and the roads will mostly be clear in your area most of the year, or you are looking for a second car this would be a fun one (just keep a savings for repair expenses).
Oh, and engine replacement or no. I avoid vehicles with that much mileage anymore unless I have enough money saved up to entirely replace suspension and transmission (just in case).
