from what i've seen in texas, 50% is pretty standard. that doesn't make it right... it's just what most places charge. there are of course exceptions (most are non-profit or grant-supported)... and i encourage you to find them if you can, but sometimes the exposure can be worth it. and don't hesitate to try to negotiate a higher percentage. i recently had some stuff in a group show. everyone else got 50% because they just accepted the gallery owners terms, but i got 60% because i asked for it - not a huge difference, but it's a start.
