As far as I understand it, there was an issue with the compatibility of Verizon phone software and the OS used on the iPhone. I can't remember specifics, as I heard about it in a conversation and not from a news source, but it wouldn't surprise me. The "Get It Now" program for downloading, images, games, ringtones, etc. is already established and would have to be reworked to work on a completely new OS.

Verizon would require a CDMA based iPhone.
This whole battery thing is pretty silly. Sure apple gouges you on replacements but so does every other cell manufacturer. Many intentionally put low quality batteries in theor phones in order to get you on the upsell later on.
At least you know you will be getting a quality battery in you ipod or iphone.
