When I was growing up chess was very popular. My brother would play for hours. Today, however, when my niece and nephew walk in the door with phones at their ears the TV or computer is turned on and the "games" begin within minutes without even a hello. I only see them 5 or 6 weekends a year, so I deal with it. Chess is not fashionable at the moment. Games go through phases so maybe chess will come back. Without the bells and whistles it's going to take a hip character in a mainstream film who plays chess to make it happen.
