I'll say this (having been, in the past, a husband sucking it up for the sake of): that approach is a very workable
short-term situation. It does fine in the short term. In the long-term, it's a complete disaster. But for the short-term, it's completely OK.
So... if that IS what's going on in that relationship, it won't be for long.
