I understand your position and respect it.
Had this soldier actually done said deeds to the kid's family it would have been unquestionably offensive to me, too. However, I would agree that the humor is rather mean spirited ...
... I feel as badly about laughing at "ethnic" jokes, too. But I still laugh privately.
