Ask him what he consider too much strain. Even lying on your back and just pretending to run can do good, keeping the muscle active is the key, whilst its active it will still retain function that can be built back up later. When you stop working it it loses functionality and then you get chicken legs which require muchos effort to correct later.
Just as a side note, i seriously damaged some nerves in one of my hands when i was young, pretty much couldn't operate it for months, and still get the odd tingle now. As long as you stick to PT, and don't believe yourself fixed until your actually told your fixed (been there, done that) you'll be fine.
