William Butler Yeats, considered one of the greatest English-language poets of the 20th century, was born on this date in 1865. Yeats once wrote, "Words are always getting conventionalized to some secondary meaning. It is one of the works of poetry to take the truants in custody and bring them back to their right senses." Poet, playwright, publisher, collector of anthologies and writer of fairy tales, Yeats received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. He was a founder of the Abbey Theatre and integral in the Irish literary renaissance.

Environmental sculptor Christo, born this day in 1935 in Bulgaria, along with his dear wife Jean Claude, born same date in Casablanca, Morocco, are noted for their controversial outdoor sculptures and displays, which have included the wrapping of Berlin's Reichstag in metallic silver fabric in 1995.
