sony(i think) made a camera recently that is HD and saves to sd cards. it was ~600-700$. and the picture quality was really high too. if i find the link, i'll let you know..
as far as miniDV goes, make sure you buy the firewire ports, cables. and check your optical zoom. my panasonic has a 24x which was the top of the line 2years ago.
