small meals is a vague term, but from indiviuals Ive encountered its stated that way because the generalized norm is three main meals a day. A generalized amount per meal is not a black and white answer; there are contributing elements that comprise what your caloric intake should be per meal. Your present weight, lean mass ratio, fat percentage, basal metabolic rate, and hopefully if done right your labwork. Other factors which throw complexity into the mix is what your goals are, how often you workout, how you're working out, how your genetics respond, and how much money you have to spend on food a week.
If that seems overboard; it is. Thats for optimal results; laying the foundation to achieve the highest results your capable of making, drug free. The bottom line is if you workout hard, stay away from krispy creams, and get good resting periods you'll do better than not.
