Look at the organization's track record. Red Cross misapprpriated huge sums of money that was supposed to help the victims of 911. They didn't do so hot after Katrina either.
Talk to those who the charity helped. From what I heard, the Salvation Army gives everything they have, the shirts off their backs quite literally, when they show up.
Found your own charity. Hey, it's an option.
