most places offered water in bottles, still or sparkling, learn to say "un jarra de agua" Ha-rra, not Jar-ra.

sorry I was looking up pronunciations and missed the whole sentence...
Most places offer bottled water, obviously at cost. But one should know to as for "un jarra de agua de grifo," or "water from the faucet"
also, I prefer the DK Eyewitness Guides: Spain It contains both Madrid and Barcelona. I like the visualness of the guide, versus any other travel guides. But I do also have some other travel books, but by far the DK is gold in my eyes.
remember that siesta time, everything is closed, so plan your eating accordingly. Eating dinner at 7pm you may be the first ones in the restaurant.
If you can afford one expensive meal, I suggest going to the Botin since it is older than American has been a country, and the food is good too!

According to the Guinness Book of Records (see certificate), this is the oldest restaurant in the world, dating from 1725. The restaurant is also mentioned in the book Fortunata y Jacinta by Benito Pérez Galdós (published 1886-1887) and Goya supposedly worked here before becoming a painter. Hemingway was a frequent visitor and pronounced it one of his favourite restaurants. Today, the restaurant is decidely a tourist spot, since it appears in so many guides. Don't let that put you off, though, becase Spaniards still go here to sample the excellent food, specialities being cochinillo asado (roast suckling pig) and cordero asado (roast lamb). The restaurant consists of four floors of tiled, wood-beamed dining rooms, with caste-iron ovens several centuries old. As you eat, you may find yourself serenaded by the ocassional "tuna", a musical group formed by students and playing traditional songs in traditional dress, complete with knickerbockers.
