bad movie night results.
little miss sunshine: well, i dunno. it was alot of things, it was nothing. it was kinda dirty dancing in the stupid finale, it was kinda welcome to the doll house in the choice of glasses olive wore; it was kinda royal tennenbaums except it wasnt. it was kinda funny in places, it had a cast that was far tooo good for the script, it had underwritten characters wandering around. but it had a proust scholar. it seems indicative that his primary function was to say over and over "i am a pre-eminent proust scholar." the cast was good though. i like kinnear--but it is kinda sad to think that talk soup had better scripts.
however, compared to the other film, it was a masterpiece.
must love dogs. sometimes when you decide "tonight is a good night for stupid movies" you are punished for it. punished with unreasonable severity. watching this film made me feel like i had walked through some invisible wall and landed in a place where boredom is a sport. in this sporting event, a good cast gets wholly defeated by a cheesy script: see diane lane look fabulous through a bare-knuckled cage match against Bad Writing which she looses, which she cannot but loose, the outcome being obvious from the opening bell; see john cusak play the same character he played in the early 80s except slightly better and with boats; see stockard channing reduced to the status of a mobile lamp, the shade of which is a horrifying mullet-perm. i found myself paying close attention to christopher plummer's segments because i wanted to know if his moustache was glued on or not. hunting for irregular moustache movements caused by glue was the most interesting thing about it. GODDAMN what a steaming pile of shit this was. and it lasted for days. DAYS i say.
moral of the story: hollywood romantic comedies are bearers of the plague. run away from them. run away.
